Kindergarten

Course Description

Welcome to St. Francis de Sales Kindergarten! Our goal is to provide the boys and girls with a foundation for spiritual, academic, and social growth. Throughout this school year the children will learn the essential building blocks necessary for each child to confidently continue their educational journey. We look forward to a productive and successful school year as we work together for the benefit of your precious children. Our prayer is for each child to learn and to grow well in God's love!

The following classroom guidelines, used in conjunction with the St. Francis de Sales Parent/Student Handbook, should answer most of your questions. In addition, both homework and announcements are posted to the SFDS website daily (sfdslv.org) and we can be contacted through email at: [email protected] or mlarson @sfdslv.org.

Kindergarten Classroom Guidelines

Absences
If your child is ill, please notify the school office by phone. When he/she returns to class, please provide a signed and dated note of explanation. As outlined on pages 18 and 19 of the Parent/Student handbook, students will be given two days to return completed make-up work following an absence. If your child has a doctor's appointment during school hours, please send a note and we will have your child ready to leave upon your arrival.

Appointments
If you have any questions or problems, please call the office to schedule an appointment. We will be happy to speak with you and we will return your call as soon as possible.

Birthdays
On your child's birthday you are welcome to send a treat for the class. Individual treats are best (cupcakes, cookies, ice cream or popsicles.) The boys and girls are invited to come to school in free dress on their birthdays. If you would like party invitations to be distributed, please be sure the invitations include all students (or all boys/all girls.)

Discipline
Students are expected to be respectful at all times. The children are asked to raise their hands to speak in class, ask a question, or use the restroom. Due to the size of our class, a disciplined environment is necessary. Interruptions caused by problem behavior will not be tolerated. If a student exhibits serious behavioral or academic problems at any time during the course of the day, the problem will be addressed immediately. A conduct chart will be posted with stickers for good behavior and a check mark for misbehavior. We have a Treasure Box as a reward for good conduct. Every Friday, those students who have maintained excellent behavior (that is, not having received a check mark) for the week will be given a certificate, as well as a trip to the Treasure Box. Each student will have his/her own sticker book. Stickers may be earned for a number of reasons (i.e. exhibiting excellent behavior, helping others, reciting prayers with extra effort or reverence, completing daily work or homework with conscientious effort, etc.) For every twenty stickers earned the students will be rewarded with a trip to the Treasure Box.  St. Francis de Sales maintains a disciplined Catholic School environment, therefore, each student is accepted on a probationary standing. All new students will be carefully observed and monitored throughout the course of the school year.

Homework
Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Your child will benefit greatly from your involvement and encouragement completing his/her homework. We will thoroughly discuss each assignment with the children and we do recommend checking the school web-site (sfdslv.org) to verify directions. The work is to be done neatly, in pencil. If coloring is required, only crayons are to be used. Upon completion, please check your child’s work, sign, and date the sheet in the lower right-hand corner. Recess will be missed to finish incomplete homework or re-do untidy work.

Parking Lot Safety Rules
Please review the Parking Rules and map on page 43 in the Parent/Student handbook. For the safety of all of our students, please adhere to the parking rules at all times.

Supplies
Please be sure to label all supplies with your child’s name and mailbox number. For your convenience the supply list is posted on the home page of our website.

Tardiness
The boys and girls may enter the classroom each morning at 8:05am. Your child will miss daily directions, announcements, and disrupt the class if he/she is late. Please have your child arrive no later than 8:15am.

Uniforms
Every student needs to arrive each day in proper uniform; parents will be immediately notified if the uniform code is not met. Please refer to pages 22-24 in the Parent/Student handbook for our Uniform Guidelines.

Vacations
Children suffer academically if classroom instruction is missed. Please check the school calendar and arrange your vacations to coincide with our schedule. If you choose to plan a vacation during school time, please do not ask for work to take with you. Upon returning it is the parent’s responsibility to assist the child in making up all assignments.

Visitors
For the safety and protection of all, visitors, parents, volunteers, repairpersons, guest speakers, etc. are asked to sign in at the School Office. All visitors will receive a visitor’s pass.  In the morning, parents/guardians are asked to drop off their children at the gate to the courtyard. This will eliminate any disruptions as our teachers and students prepare for their day. Unless there is an absolute need, please do not enter the classroom at this time. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Parents/guardians of Kindergarten children may wish to accompany their children to the classroom door for the first few days; please feel free to do so!

Volunteers
Volunteers are valued members of our community and we sincerely appreciate your hard work and dedication on behalf of our children. Without volunteers, we would have a difficult time providing many of our extra programs. Giving of your time and talents adds so much to our school community. There is no job that is too small and no task that is too insignificant. May God bless you for all that you do for the children.
