- Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Science Fair Guidelines: Tuesday, September 4, 2012: Science fair guidelines and timeline distributed to students in seventh and eighth grade. Thursday, September 6, 2012 and Friday, September 7, 2012: Science fair guidelines and timeline distributed to sixth grade at open house or the classroom. Friday, September 14, 2012: signed guidelines and timeline form due. Seventh and eighth graders who do not turn in the forms by today will be considered late on their homework resulting in a parent notification form. Sixth grade forms will not be accepted after this date. Seventh and eighth grade may work in groups of two or individually. Sixth grade may also work in groups of two or individually. Although optional, the science fair is highly encouraged at this level. Monday, September 17, 2012 to Friday, September 28, 2012: Students must present to Ms. Studdard a clean composition book (no other writing within the book) and 20-25 index cards. Only one composition book and a set of index cards is required per project. Please consider this a homework assignment. Timeline Monday, October 1, 2012: Science fair question is due. This question should be on an index card with the names of the students on the first line of the index card. Monday, October 1, 2012 – Friday, October 12, 2012: Classroom instruction on writing a research paper. Monday, October 15, 2012 – Thursday, November 1, 2012: Collect all research in proper form on index cards. Place index card in an envelope with name on the front of the envelope. Envelope to be handed in to Ms. Studdard on Friday, November 2, 2012. Monday, November 5, 2012 to Sunday, November 18, 2012: writing of rough draft of research paper. Monday, November 19, 2012: Ms. Studdard will review rough draft of research paper. Tuesday, November 20, 2012 to Thursday, November 29, 2012: final copy of research paper to be typed in accordance with directions given in classroom. Friday, November 30, 2012: research paper is due TODAY along with the index card envelope taped to the back inside cover. Monday, December 10, 2012: This is an important day. This paper will be handed in to me neatly typed with a proper heading stating the following: Category (biological science or physical science); Question or purpose (I will accept either one; one is in question form and the other is a statement); Title of the experiment; Hypothesis (based on research); Materials (in list form only and only using metric units); Procedure (list step by step what is being done during the experiment. I do not want a paragraph.) Once the above assignment has been graded and returned to you, you may recopy the entire assignment with corrections into your composition book. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 – January 13, 2013: It is now time to do the experiment and record all results in your composition book. Remember: results may be quantitative or qualitative changes which occurred in the experiment. Monday, January 14, 2013: Composition book check for results. Your experiment is to be completed by this date. Monday, January 14, 2013 – Sunday, January 27, 2013: These next two weeks will be very busy. Anytime during these next two weeks, you may show me your graphs, conclusion, and abstract. Once checked by me, place one copy in your composition book and one copy on your science fair board. Monday, January 28, 2013: last day for me to check the graphs, conclusion, and abstract. If not received by this date, it will be considered late. Monday, January 28, 2013 – Sunday, February 3, 2013: Put your board together and be ready to present it to the class starting on Monday, February 4, 2013. ALL BOARDS ARE DUE ON FEBRUARY 14, 2013. BOARDS WILL REMAIN IN THE CLASSROOM UNTIL AFTER THE SCIENCE FAIR. In short, everything done during the science experiment will be checked by Ms. Studdard, and then transferred into a composition book. The composition book is actually the entire science board in a book. Science, English, and computer class will have designated times to work on the project. Please do not hesitate to see me during the lunch hour or recess if you need help with your project or putting your board together. Hint: use rubber cement to glue all materials to your board.
