Weekly Notable News Update

Dear Parents,

The annual First Grade mission project benefits Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation (NVCCF). After the cancer diagnosis of our youngest son in 1989, we traveled to California numerous times for chemotherapy, radiation, and a bone marrow transplant. Nevada had limited resources and no pediatric oncologists until a few years later. In 1993, my husband joined local medical staff, parents of critically ill children, donors, and friends to start NVCCF. NVCCF continues to provide financial, emotional, and recreational support for families with critical, life threatening illnesses. In 1996, we created Camp Cartwheel to provide safe recreational opportunities for critically ill children and their siblings.

First Grade families are asked to donate a $10.00 gift card to Target or Walmart by May 1, 2025.  The gift cards will help families receive needed items during long hospitalization and treatment.

We will be working in Unit 16a of More Adventures of the Superkids. The vocabulary word lists for unit 16 is on Seesaw. One on one assessments will continue. Please study Spelling Unit 16a.  Please study the Spelling words.

Please read both weekly stories and study the unit vocabulary for homework each night. Students should be able to read both stories fluently by Wednesday.  Weekly video recordings of the Superkids "Super Short" will be uploaded on Seesaw by 6:00 pm Thursday. Please have your child practice reading orally until they are fluent. When recording the video, please eliminate outside noises. Students must be visible. Please do not assist during the video. Additionally, please help your child prepare for weekly AR quizzes.

We will be working  in Math Chapter 13 "Geometry". Please continue to practice addition and subtraction fact families 0-15 (i.e.1+2=3, 2+1=3, 3-1=2, 3-2=1). These facts are part of nightly homework and must be committed to memory. Flash cards may be used for quick recall during home practice only. Fingers may not be used. Please practice skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, to 120. Also, begin practicing time to the half hour and recognizing the value of coins.

Reminders and requests:
  • UNIFORM STANDARDS ARE IN THE PARENT STUDENT HANDBOOK. The standards must be followed by everyone. Very few uniform infractions occur in First Grade. Thank you for following the guidelines. We are currently using the summer school uniform policy. Students must wear plain white, crew socks (mid calf length) only and free from any designs. Belts are required if the shorts have belt loops. Polishable shoes are to be worn on regular uniform days. Students have grown and it may be necessary to lower hems or purchase new items. Blue skorts, shorts and jumpers must be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee. No jewelry is permitted. Post earrings are allowed for girls. Haircuts must be traditional styles.
  • School begins when the first bell rings at 8:05 and dismisses at 2:45. It is very distracting and disruptive when students are late or leave early. Please do not pick up students early unless a doctor appointment has been scheduled. As stated in the handbook, use half days and scheduled days off for routine appointments. Your attention to this matter is appreciated.
  • Please watch absenteeism carefully. Arch-diocesan attendance policy is noted in the Parent Student handbook and strictly followed. Students absent in excess of 20 days may not be promoted. They will be placed on probation for the first grading period of Second Grade.
  • Parents are primary educators. Please reinforce neatness on all work. Messy work (including homework) will be redone in the Music room during recess. All work (printing, cutting, and coloring) should reflect your child's finest effort. Let's finish strong!
  • Please review graded work in the Weekly folder. Review homework and sign the homework planner upon completion each evening.
  • Stay informed. Read and subscribe to this newsletter and the Home and School Connection.

God bless you. God bless America! Let's finish strong!
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

Blessings,
Mrs. Thomas
